CRIME ALERT 12/24

The North East Crime Alert for December 2024 by Police Scotland offers crime prevention advice to residents in the North East. It includes tips on winter driving safety, online shopping, password management, and home security to prevent burglaries. The alert also highlights issues like bike theft, scams, and the training of probationary officers in the Scottish Police force. Its goal is to inform the public, promote safety, and encourage community involvement in reducing crime during the festive season and beyond.  Below is an overview and a link to the alert.

1. Winter Driving Safety: Emphasizes vehicle preparation, safe driving practices (Reduce speed, increase following distance, avoid sudden movements, use higher gears, and use headlights) , and carrying essential winter items:  blankets, warm clothing, non-perishable snacks, a first aid kit, torch, ice scraper, shovel, jump leads and mobile phone charger. 
2. Online Shopping and Scam Prevention: Offers advice on secure online shopping, including using trusted websites, limiting personal information, and checking for SSL encryption, alongside tips on managing passwords and monitoring financial statements. 
3. Home Security: Focuses on securing homes during darker months, with tips on locking doors, using alarms, CCTV, and timers for lights, and ensuring adequate lighting, perimeter security, and social media awareness to prevent burglaries. 
4. Bike Theft Prevention: Encourages the use of certified locks, registration, and forensic marking to deter bike theft, especially following the Christmas period when new bikes are common targets. 
5. Scam Awareness: Alerts residents to various scams, including money muling (offers of easy cash where bank details are requested, leading to involvement in money laundering) , anti-virus schemes, and online fraud, with specific advice on avoiding common scam types affecting local residents.  
6. Community Policing: Highlights the role of local community policing teams in improving safety, offering home security advice, and encouraging community involvement, with contact details for support.
