What is forced marriage?
Forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both individuals do not freely consent to the union and are coerced into it through physical pressure, emotional manipulation, threats, or abuse. Unlike arranged marriages—where both parties willingly agree—forced marriages remove the individual's right to choose. This practice violates human rights and is considered a form of abuse and, in some cases, modern slavery. In Scotland and the wider UK, forced marriage is a criminal offence under the Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act 2011, and victims are entitled to legal protection and support.
