What is Gender-Based Violence (GBV)?
"Gender-based violence is a function of gender inequality, and an abuse of male power and privilege. It takes the form of actions that result in physical, sexual and psychological harm or suffering to women and children, or affront to their human dignity, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life." – Equally Safe
The Scottish Women's Right Centre helps us to understand the umbrella of Gender Based Violence;
- Rape or other sexual crimes
- Domestic violence
- Stalking
- Forced marriage
- So-called 'honour' crimes
- Sexual harassment
At North East Scotland College we strive to ensure that Gender Based Violence is acknowledged and is something that we freely speak about. It is essential for people to feel able to reach out for support that feels right for them by being aware of the supports available to them. Check out supports available here.

Police Scotland's Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy
In 2022, Police Scotland conducted a series of public engagement activities, to allow survivors of GBV to share their stories, ensuring their experiences helped increase understanding of the impact of GBV and the barriers to reporting. This valuable learning was crucial to the development of Police Scotland's Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, which was published in 2023. To read about the lived experiences that were shared and to access the approved Strategy, please see Police Scotland's website here.
