Understanding and Addressing Sextortion Among College Students
Sextortion is an alarming form of cyber-enabled crime where individuals are coerced into providing explicit images or money under threat of having private materials shared online. It disproportionately affects young people, including college students, due to their high levels of online activity and engagement on social media.
A recent UK study revealed that over 2,000 cases of sextortion were reported in 2022, but experts believe the actual number is far higher due to underreporting. According to research, 76% of sextortion victims are under 25 years old, with a significant number being students balancing academic pressures and personal challenges.
In Scotland, sextortion has become a growing concern, with Police Scotland identifying this crime as a priority issue affecting young people. Victims are often approached through fake profiles on social media or dating apps, where perpetrators manipulate them into sharing compromising material. Within hours, this material is used to extort money or more explicit content, leaving victims feeling trapped and ashamed.
At NESCol, we are committed to raising awareness and providing support for students facing such challenges. Remember, you are not alone, and help is available. If you or someone you know is a victim of sextortion:
• Do not engage further with the perpetrator.
• Save evidence of communications.
• Contact Police Scotland or reach out to our Student Advice Centre for confidential support.
Together, we can create a safer online environment and empower students to protect themselves and report these crimes without fear.
